In the summer of 2018, I had the privilege of serving as a news/editorial intern at The Hartford Courant, America's oldest continuously published newspaper. I covered everything from the Connecticut gubernatorial primary race, to medical marijuana dispensaries, to high school graduations and neighborhood crime watches. This invaluable internship showed me the true power of local watchdog journalism, as well as the importance of connecting face-to-face with community groups to establish a solid, authentic reporting network.
In the story to the left, I spoke with three local heroes who agreed to a very brief interview just one month after saving a Hartford policewoman. Their account was intensely harrowing and emotional, which was only exacerbated by reporting time constraints. |
